When Leaves Begin to Fall

“For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven.” — Ecclesiastes 3:1 (NLT)

Autumn announces itself one leaf at a time.

The mornings grow cooler. Shadows stretch across the yard. Green leaves turn gold, orange, and red before releasing their grip on the branches. Soon they cover lawns, roads, and walking trails.

We admire their colors, but autumn is really a season of letting go.

A tree does not chase after yesterday’s leaves. It releases them and prepares for what comes next.

Solomon wrote, “For everything there is a season.” He understood that life does not remain the same. Ecclesiastes 3 speaks of beginnings and endings, planting and harvesting, weeping and laughing, mourning and dancing.

We experience seasons too.

Some seasons bring new opportunities. Others bring goodbyes. Children grow up. Careers end. Friends move away. Churches change. Plans that once seemed certain take unexpected turns.

Our natural response is often to hold tighter.

We cling to routines because they are comfortable. We hold onto disappointments because we cannot change what happened. We carry old grudges because forgiveness feels too much like surrender. Sometimes we even resist something new because we are still mourning what used to be.

Autumn offers another picture.

There is a time to let go.

Letting go does not mean the past was unimportant. Those brilliant leaves were once necessary. They captured sunlight and helped nourish the tree. Their season simply came to an end.

Some things in our lives are like that.

God may ask us to release an old hurt. Forgive someone. Step away from a habit. Accept a change we did not choose. Trust Him with a future we cannot see.

Bare branches can look empty, but the tree is not dead.

It is preparing.

That truth matters when we enter a season where God seems quiet. We may not see new growth. We may wonder whether anything is happening. Yet roots continue reaching into the soil, and spring is already part of God's design.

Perhaps you are enjoying a season of harvest right now. Thank God for it.

Perhaps leaves are falling around you, and something familiar is ending. Trust Him through it.

Perhaps you feel as though you are standing in winter with nothing but bare branches.

Keep trusting.

The God who created the seasons knows what He is doing in yours.

Autumn reminds us that change does not always mean something has gone wrong. Sometimes God uses an ending to prepare us for a beginning we cannot see yet.

When God asks you to release yesterday, trust Him with tomorrow.

Prayer

Father, thank You for every season of my life. Give me gratitude for the seasons of harvest and faith during the seasons of change. Show me what I need to release. When I cannot see what You are doing, help me trust that You are still at work. Prepare my heart for whatever season comes next. Amen.

Takeaway:

When you see a falling leaf this autumn, ask yourself: What am I holding onto that God may be asking me to release?
