“Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.” Psalm 139:23 (NLT)
Towering above the landscape, a volcano often appears peaceful. Its slopes may be covered with forests, flowers, or even small villages. Birds nest on its sides. Tourists snap photographs. From a distance, everything seems calm and stable.
Yet deep beneath the surface, something unseen may be happening. Pressure builds. Molten rock churns. Gases collect. The mountain looks quiet, but hidden forces are at work below. Eventually, if the pressure becomes great enough, the volcano erupts. Lava pours down its sides. Ash darkens the sky. What was concealed is suddenly revealed.
The human heart can be much the same way.
A person may appear calm on the outside while anger, bitterness, fear, or resentment quietly builds within. Others may not see it. Even we may ignore it. But unresolved sin and unchecked emotions have a way of surfacing eventually. What remains hidden in the heart often reveals itself through words, attitudes, and actions.
That is why David prayed, “Search me, O God, and know my heart.” He understood that God sees beneath the surface. The Lord knows our thoughts, motives, fears, and struggles long before anyone else does. Rather than waiting for a spiritual eruption, David invited God to examine his heart and reveal anything that needed attention.
The good news is that God does not expose our hearts to condemn us but to heal us. Through His Word, His Spirit, and prayer, He removes the destructive pressures that can build inside us. He replaces bitterness with forgiveness, fear with faith, and guilt with grace.
Today, take a few moments to let God search your heart. Don't settle for looking calm on the outside. Ask Him to work deep beneath the surface. A heart surrendered to Christ is far safer than a volcano waiting to erupt.
Prayer: Lord, search my heart and reveal anything that does not honor You. Cleanse me, change me, and help me walk closely with You today. Amen.
